Enjoy the Summer

My first year at South Hamilton is coming to a close, and it’s been an amazing opportunity to serve the school and community here.  It is a privilege to live in this community and to work with this dedicated educational team and supportive community.  I’m sad for halls to be so quiet this summer, yet happy for the time the summer break allows for kids to play outdoors and for families to be together.  I am looking forward to starting the 2022-2023 school year with our reenergized, future-ready Hawks.

Our Partners in Education

Summer is a time for students and school staff to relax and rejuvenate.  Even though formal school is out, kids are still learning away from the classroom.

Here are some ideas to keep the learning going this summer:

  • Social Development - Encourage neighborhood kids to play or hang out together.  They learn to take turns, share, and solve problems through social interactions.
  • Reading Development - Encourage kids to read and help them develop a love of reading. The local library is a perfect weekly stop. Sometimes kids just need help finding a book that is at their level of both skill and interest, and then they’re on their way to success.
  • Math Development - Encourage kids to use math in the real world. When opportunities arise, have them count objects, figure correct change at the store, or solve a problem.
  • Creativity Development - Encourage kids to create something - music, a website, drawings, jewelry, cookies, a game, an obstacle course, etc.

In addition to the ideas above, just having new experiences helps kids build background knowledge. Some summer ideas include going camping; catching lightning bugs; roasting marshmallows; looking at the stars; canoeing or kayaking; having a garage sale; washing a car; visiting a nursing home, lake or zoo; or making ice cream, iced tea or lemonade.

Learning is still happening over the summer – it looks a little different than from inside a classroom but is just as important.  Thanks, parents, for all you do over the summer to keep learning underway and the transition back smoother.
