For the 2017/18 school year, and all future school years, all students entering into 7th grade and born after 9/15/2004, will need proof of one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). All students entering into 12th grade, and born after 9/15/1999, will need proof of 2 doses of meningococcal (A,C,W,Y) vaccine; or 1 dose if received when the student was 16 years of age or older.
Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) provides protection against 4 serogroups (A, C, W, & Y) that cause serious, life-threatening illness. Meningococcal bacteria are spread via upper respiratory droplets, such as saliva. Mortality is about 10-15% even with appropriate treatment. Of those who recover, up to 20% suffer from serious after-effects such as permanent hearing loss, limb loss, or brain damage. Meningococcal vaccines are safe and have been found to be 85-100% effective in preventing infection from these 4 subtypes. (Info from IDPH)
***PLEASE NOTE: Per Iowa Law, THERE IS NO GRACE/EXTENSION PERIOD for implementation of this requirement. The proof MUST be presented by the start of the school year in order to be enrolled in school. You may present a Certificate of Exemption (Medical from a physician; or notarized religious waiver), if you so desire. If your child already has an exemption on file, you do NOT need a new/additional one.
